After watching The Gourmet Farmer on SBS I was rather excited to meet Matthew Evans at the Salamanca Markets on Saturday morning. He was at his food stall selling his cheeses, breads and cured meets. Matthew Evans was once a trained chef before he became a restaurant reviewer for the Sydney Morning Herald, he then realised his dreams of moving to Tasmania, to raise pigs, sheep, milk cows and be close to nature and locally grown produce. I love Matthews’s television series because it is the ideal way to live. Situated in the south of the state surrounded by nature, eggs fresh every morning, making your own bread, cheese and milk would be an amazing way to live after living in the big smoke. During the series, local producers show Matthew how to make cheese, select pigs, pluck chickens, press cider and offer him endless support and advise, and the best part, he cooks a beautiful meal at the end for everyone to show his support. The success of Matthews television show nationwide shows an ideal life for many Australians, bringing in the tourism dollars to the state, and possibly the move for many mainlanders to live the dream in Tasmania. For me as a food lover and the thirst for good quality produce, he is an inspiration.
Another inspiration of mine is Tetsuya; he isn’t shy about his passion for Tasmanian produce and using it in his Sydney restaurant Tetsuya’s. He has become involved in many Tasmanian products and his involved in the making of new ones. Many products are featured in both his Sydney and Singapore restaurants. Tetsuya is a brand ambassador to help acknowledge Tasmania to the world. In my opinion, both Matthew Evans and Tetsuya are assisting to the states tourism industry; they are inspirational in the food industry and are honoring the states beautiful produce.
