On the weekend I took a break from the extensive work on the website and travelled up North to Launceston. Driving through the beautiful Tamar Valley i visit Jansz, Ninth Island and Tamar Valley Wines. Traveling further North I arrive at Calstock, first visit is the House of Anvers specialises in handmade Belgian chocolate and is located north of Calstock. Belgian Igor Van Gerwen, who came to Australia in 1989, has found the Tasmanian cream and butter to the richest in flavour, ideally suited for truffles and fudge. This man is a food genius, with specialties in sweets. We stop at a local French influenced bakery, cheese baguettes with smoked salmon, following a decadent chocolate croissant. A short drive takes me to Ashgrove cheese. The milk comes straight from the family dairy farm located next door to the cheesery. There is extensive collection of cheeses to sample; the famous pepper berry cheese is a must to sample.
Next is a visit to a local salmon farm, the salmon is smoked and prepared in a mix of peppers, garlic, caraway seeds, mustard sees and dill. Taking a break from our extensive food and wine trip, we immerse ourselves into the salmon, bread and Ashgrove cheese we purchased earlier in the day. Back to the office the following day, I feel utterly inspired by the food and wine tour. I am finding a greater appreciation for our produce, particularly from the north of the state, where much of our famous produce is located. An extensive marketing campaign should be conducted by Tourism Tasmania to promote the north of the state for future interest and appreciation of the region.
